Lev arrives in London from an Eastern European town.  He is jobless, knows little English and has left behind his elderly mother and 5 year old daughter.  His ambition is to learn new skills and return home to a more prosperous way of life.  A hard worker his goes from sleeping in the street to washing dishes, delivering pamplets, picking asparagus, and to working as a chef.  He sends money home when possible.  He then learns his old village is to be drowned by the waters of a new dam.  By working 2 jobs and sheer preservance he eventually returns home to his family and opens a restuarant in a nearby town.  Hard work and persistence win out.  A slow start to his book but the story takes command.
