The Children's and Young Adult sections of the library have book collections and reading support information to cater for children from infancy to secondary school age.

Please do not mend torn pages in books.  We use a special tape for this and prefer you to return the pieces with the book for us to mend.

 

Notes

When you check the book catalogue you may see a note listed.  eg "Fact based fiction".  You can click on this note (or enter it on it's own when enquiring), and you will get a list of similar books.

Check out Programmes for the fun happenings at the Masterton Library. There are fun programmes with stories, activities, entertainers and crafts for all ages. Don't miss the Summer Reading Programme, Holiday Programmes and the Pre-school and Kohanga Reo programmes.

Teens to tots

A give-away magazine that can be found in the library and is packed with ideas to support great parenting.

 

Board Books
For the very young this collection has titles that cover concepts such as colours and opposites, as well as some simple versions of the very best picture books plus pictorial items.  Books are made of heavy card and are designed to let very small children use them without damage.

Picture Books
For up to 10-12 years of age include traditional stories, New Zealand publications and examples of the latest picture books. Books are selected for this section on the basis of the importance of the illustrations in the development of the story. The age and interests of the child are important when selecting from the collection.

Early Readers
For those developing and practicing their independent reading skills. This collection comprises readers that have been given reading levels by the publisher. Those using the collection can check the level of the reader and select books to suit or extend the reader according to the grading on the books. Note: Different publishers do use different grading systems.

Reading Kits

This collection is stored beneath the Early Readers and contains sets of book which help with the development of reading skills such as phonetics, some read along books, or set of early readers with teaching support material.

Junior Fiction
For first stage independent reading through to 10 - 12 years. This collection includes classic titles, traditional stories, favorites from the last 20 to 30 years, and the new and exciting including many series. Books are selected for this area because the main characters are under 12 years. Picture puzzle books, maze books and look and find books feature in this collection,

Young Adult
For mature readers. This collection has both fiction and non-fiction titles. The non-fiction concentrates mainly on the issues that confront Young Adults socially, educationally and personally. The fiction is selected for this collection because the main characters are 12 years and over. A selection of high interest lower reading level material is included to encourage reluctant readers and a small selection of magazines, graphic novels and talking books are also available.

Junior Non Fiction Information books
For recreational and leisure activities. This collection contains material suitable for infants to adults seeking accessible information on a broad range of subjects. Selection for the collection focuses on the current interests and activities of young people rather than their curriculum and educational requirements.

Junior Magazines
A small collection of magazines suitable for various ages with a focus on activity ideas and educational information.

Graphic Novels

Stories told predominantly in picture / comic format.

Extra Large Collection

A collection of larger format books which are stored together because of there height.  They include picture puzzle books, mazes, puzzles, collections of classic stories.

Parent Reading Collection

A collection shelved in the children's area to enable caregivers to quickly select books that will support their interest in skill development in the parenting supportive child care practices, reading and mathematical skill encouragement etc.  Includes "Brainy Baby" videos.

Audio Visual Collection

This collection includes songs, stories read onto tape or CD, DVD's, Videos and a small collection of games.
